Choosing between frameless glass and aluminium pool fencing is one of the most common decisions pool owners face. Both are compliant, both look great and both will last - but they suit different homes, budgets and priorities. Here is what you need to know before you decide.
The case for frameless glass
Frameless glass pool fencing is the premium choice for a reason. There are no vertical posts interrupting the view, no horizontal rails breaking up the sightline - just clean uninterrupted panels of toughened glass from ground to top rail.
If your pool is a feature of the backyard and you want to show it off, glass does that better than any other fencing option. It works particularly well on elevated decks, pool areas with landscaping worth seeing and modern architectural homes where clean lines matter.
From a practical standpoint glass is also low maintenance - a wipe down with dish soap and warm water is all it takes to keep it looking new. There are no paint finishes to chip, no powder coat to fade and no timber to rot.
The trade-offs are cost and context. Frameless glass is the most expensive pool fencing option upfront. It also requires a reasonably stable surface to install into - core drilled into concrete or fixed via spigots - and it is not the best choice for every backyard. If you have young kids who are rough on things, a grassed area directly next to the fence, or a dog that likes to run into things, glass panels copping repeated impact is worth thinking about before you commit.
The case for aluminium pool fencing
Aluminium pool fencing - flat top, PIK, BARR batten or custom profiles - covers a much wider range of applications than glass and typically at a lower price point.
It suits homes where the fence needs to blend into a garden setting rather than disappear entirely. A flat top aluminium fence in monument or satin black can look just as sharp as glass in the right setting - and in some cases sharper, particularly where the fence needs to follow a slope, step up around a retaining wall or handle an unusual layout.
Aluminium is also the more practical choice where there are kids, pets or grassed areas involved. No glass panels to worry about, no spigots to trip over and a fence profile that handles the rough and tumble of family life without concern.
The trade-off is visibility. Aluminium fencing does block some sightline to the pool - how much depends on the style you choose. Flat top with wide picket spacing gives reasonable visibility. Batten styles with tighter spacing are more private but more enclosed. If an uninterrupted view is important to you, glass is the better choice.
What about cost?
Frameless glass is typically 30-50% more expensive than aluminium on a per-metre basis when you factor in panels, hardware and installation. The gap narrows on smaller fencing runs and widens on larger ones.
For a budget conscious build, aluminium delivers a compliant, good looking fence at a more accessible price point. For a forever home where you want the premium finish and are prepared to pay for it, glass is worth the investment.
